Hot Dog Hot Rod

Hot Dog Hot Rod is primarily a jazz and blues band that plays music from the 20s to 70s as well as few modern numbers that have been transformed to suit the old-school vibe of the band. At its core, Hot Dog Hot Rod is a three-piece band, though other musicians are brought in on occasion. Kara Braithwaite-Westoby, Liam Roth and Rowena Rushton-Green are the permanent members and together have a plethora of musical achievements. Kara Braithwaite-Westoby is a classically trained guitarist whose passion lies just as much in playing classical pieces as playing the blues. He is also a composer and has composed music for many events including award winning fringe-festival performances and university funded plays. He is currently being commissioned to compose and act as musical director for an adaptation of Brothers Grimm’s fairy tale. He was also the front man for the Dunedin rock band Helter Skelter that spent many years gigging throughout Dunedin. In Hot Dog Hot Rod Kara plays guitar, harmonica and he sings. Liam Roth is a multi-instrumentalist who has played bass and guitar in many local Dunedin bands and also played music in Canada. He has released two solo EPs and is currently working on another that is being produced in British Columbia. He has played in bands of varying musical styles- from metal to jazz to reggae, and his musical adaptability even lead him to do session work and live performances with Montreal hip hop artist Myer Clarity. In Hot Dog Hot Rod Liam plays guitar, bass, banjo, and sings. Rowena Rushton-Green is another multi-instrumentalist who has also been playing music locally for many years. Her band ‘Sewage’ made the top 14 Rockquest bands in New Zealand and her jazz band ‘Hoodoo Voodoo’ won best jazz combo at the Queenstown Jazz Festival youth competition. When she played with the Logan Park jazz band they won various awards including Best Ensemble and Best Repertoire at EKKA Royal Queensland Fair in Brisbane. She has also composed award-winning music.
